New 7 Wonders of Nature

07/01/2009 - 07/07/2009

Place of event: Iguazu Falls

The Iguassu Falls, one of the most astonishing landmarks of Brazil, consists of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometers of the Iguassu River. The Iguassu National Park, where the Falls are located, had its importance recognized by UNESCO and was added to the World Heritage List on 1986. The Park is home to many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, among them the giant otter and the giant anteater.

Because of its importance and natural beauty, Iguassu Falls is an official candidate to be one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature by the New Seven Wonders of the World Foundation. Competing against other scenic places of South America, Iguassu Falls had passed to the second phase. The new voting period has started on January 7th and goes until July 7th, when the 77 most nominated places in the world will be proclaimed. The board will then select the 21 finalists and they will be announced on July 21st of 2009. The last stage of voting will be extended to 2010. The "New7Wonders of Nature" will be proclaimed at the beginning of 2011.

Iguazu Falls

As of April 2009 it was ranking seventh in the category for lake, rivers, and waterfalls. Iguassu Falls is competing against Angel Falls, in Venezuela, and Niagara Falls, in USA. Please help us out and vote at the official website now!
